Eagle Rising Fishing with Bears Black Fish!

Returning Sockeye

"Over the years I have had the great pleasure of witnessing the phenomenon of nature. I find it incredible and very inspirational to watch the Sockeye salmon return to their birth rivers year after year. I have produced two other salmon designs to date, but it is 'Returning Sockeye' that I keep coming back to.

The image I saw was like looking underwater and watching Sockeyes pass by. The colours of Sockeye spawning are so pronounced and vivid that I could not resist painting them.

It is believed that the Tlingit people stemmed from the salmon. They transformed themselves into humans as they entered the land. To represent this transformation and link to our past, I painted the image of a human hand inside each fish.

Salmon, as many know, have been the main source of sustenance for our people for many years. Through their persistence and their sacrifices, we were able to live healthy lives. By painting this, I am also paying homage to them."
