Creating the Watchmen
"This painting tells of the creation of the three watchmen who are placed on top of many totem poles to be the protectors of a village. There are three of them so that they can keep watch in all directions.
Here, the Raven is shown giving life to the third watchman, whose head can be seen in the bottom of the circle or Raven. The other two look on as the Raven strains to create the last watchman. Under the two figures on the side, are a pair of Eagles whose responsibility it is to transport the three to the tops of the totem poles.
These watchmen are believed to have supernatural powers in that they can see what is to come. They are a gift from the Creator. Their status in society is shown through the wearing of their potlatch hats. These are a symbol of standing and nobility within a nation." |
